Loon Facts


- Loons are great divers and excellent swimmers. They are able to swim up to twenty miles per hour, dive as deep as two hundred feet, and can stay underwater for as long as five minutes.

- The common loon has red eyes which help them see underwater while catching their prey. Prey includes different types of fish, crayfish, frogs, and insects. 

- The common loon's lifespan is up to thirty years.

- Loon's take flight at up to seventy miles per hour. Their wingspan reaches forty six inches and they weigh up to twelve pounds, equivalent to a large duck. 

 - The common loon derived its name because of how clumsy they walk on land. A loons legs are located in the far back of their bodies, so they are not well balanced when walking on dry land.
